Biodiversity
We want to create space for a wealth of different life forms on the land we cultivate. For decades, we have therefore been taking measures to preserve biodiversity and maintain soil health.
With these measures, we are committed to preserving biodiversity:
Cultivation of 15 hectares of cup plant (Silphium perfoliatum)
The flowering period lasts 6 to 8 weeks starting in early July – during the months when blossoms become scarce again, the plant provides bees with resources for around 150 kg of honey per hectare of Silphium.
Once established, Silphium can remain in the same location for 15 to 20 years, requiring only fertilization to maintain its yield level.
Wildflower areas and strips
On around 5 hectares of field margins, we sow flower strips each year with mixtures of about 20 different native flowering plant species
Meadows and riparian buffer strips
We maintain 19.3 hectares of meadows, 5.5 hectares of which are managed extensively. This means that these areas are mown far less frequently than other meadows, helping to support and preserve meadow life, including insects and other organisms.
Part of these meadows has been sown with an autochthonous (historically native) seed mixture in order to preserve traditional Bavarian plant varieties.
On our arable land, we have also established a total of 4 hectares of riparian buffer strips to help maintain the high quality of regional water resources.
